Yet Another Half-Crazed Rant
by bassgravi

I do not understand the atheist, who denies there is a God. I do not understand the agnostic, who wavers back and forth wondering what and whom to believe, yet I have hope for both of these.

Small Children Can Be TERRIFYING email to someone | printer friendly
Small Children Can Be TERRIFYING
Adventures in Teaching Beginning Strings
by bassgravi on Thursday 10 November 2005

So...I've been teaching beginner strings for a couple/few months now, and to be perfectly honest, it's been fun. Although, I have to admit, sometimes when you realize your surrounded by fourth graders and outnumbered, it's a bit daunting.
Teaching does have it's rewards though. There are a lot of little sappy 'teacher' moments I won't be forgetting any time soon, like the girl who left saying "Mom, I'm gonna practice tonight, okay?", when at the beginning of class she was almost in tears because she couldn't seem to hold her bow the right way; or the girl who just had trouble 'getting it' that listened and watched me play it for her and then turned around and played the song we were working on perfectly.
To top it all off, the instrument(s) I'm teaching are not my primary instrument, so what was a terrifying prospect has turned into a fun learning *and* teaching experience for yours truly. It's great to see these kids walking in wanting to learn, and leaving wanting to know more.
If that doesn't give you warm fuzzies, then I don't know what could.

Bed shopping not so punny email to someone | printer friendly
Bed shopping not so punny
by bassgravi
Okay, okay...I know, dumb title. This, I submit here instead of on my own site or on my xanga because IMHO this site needs a little non-press affiliated commentary...(and just my luck tommorow's biggest story will be about death by mattresses...*sigh*)
So...here is my saga:
Mattress Shopping:Day One
It was a nice day outside; not too cool, not too hot, and we had plenty of sun. We left around 4:30pm, hoping to avoid the brunt of rush-hour traffic. The traffic was admittedly heavy, but not the bumper-to-bumper melee common to true rush-hour traffic. Fortunately, store #1 was nearby. We turned into the parking lot shortly after getting into the car. The store windows displayed the mattresses almost gaudily. Banners advertising the latest specials hung from the windows like obscenely decorated band-aids holding the windows in place. We gathered ourselves for the experience and went inside. Our star salesperson was, of course, laying in bed reading. This made me think I really need to reconsider my job options. She was very helpful, very cheerful, and naturally she tried to sell us immediately. We were
of course unswayed, with our steely force of will and desire to find the
best deal for the most comfortable mattress we could find. By the time we left we had discovered we were quite partial to the very soft pillow top and memory foam mattresses. We meandered through the store while another customer kept our salesperson busy. Finally, notes in hand comparing prices and comfortability (my new word), we said out goodbyes and scurried through the heat to the comfortably cool air-conditioned environment of the car.
Resolved to find the best possible price and visit as many places as possible we went to the mall to battle through store number two. Fortunately, we were prepared to lay down and do nothing. Unfortunately, store number two only yielded a box-like bed made solely for the purpose of displaying some colorful bedding, so we retreated gracefully and head for store number 3.
Store number three held one interesting mattress with a very interesting price, was devoid of rabid salespeople, but unfortunately did not display bedding in such a way that we could test the mattress...
End Day One

In Defense of Certainty email to someone | printer friendly
In Defense of Certainty

It's trendy to be suspicious of people with "deeply held views." And it's wrong
By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER

"And in [William] Pryor's case, his beliefs are so well known, so deeply held, that it's very hard to believe, very hard to believe that they're not going to deeply influence the way he comes about saying, 'I will follow the law.' And that would be true of anybody who had very, very deeply held views."

--Senator Charles Schumer, during a hearing on the nomination of William Pryor for U.S. appeals-court judge, June 2003

Some Arabs see beginning of new era email to someone | printer friendly
Some Arabs see beginning of new era
02:56 PM CST on Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Associated Press

KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia - It was a scene the Arab world's autocratic regimes have dreaded -- and through the power of satellite TV, it could catch on as fast as the latest hit music video: Peaceful, enormous crowds carrying flags and flowers bringing down a government.

What happened in Lebanon this week, analysts say, is the beginning of a new era in the Middle East, one in which popular demand pushes the momentum for democracy and people's will can no longer be disregarded.

Dominos email to someone | printer friendly
Dominos
Lawrence Kudlow

The dominos of democracy continue to fall in the Middle East. First Afghanistan, then the Palestinian territories, then Iraq. Throw in the Ukraine for good measure. Throw in Egypt, where over the weekend President Mubarak announced the first direct Presidential elections in the nation’s history.

Now add Lebanon, where 10,000 protestors, gathering in Martyr’s Square and defying a government ban on demonstrations, have just forced the collapse of Lebanon’s Syria-dominated prime minister Omar Karami’s government.

"The Media Wants Kerry to Win" email to someone | printer friendly

"The media, I think, wants Kerry to win. And I think they're going to portray Kerry and Edwards — I'm talking about the establishment media, not Fox — as being young and dynamic and optimistic, and there's going to be this glow about them, collective glow."

-- Evan Thomas, assistant managing editor of Newsweek, offered this confession on media bias on the PBS program "Inside Washington," whereupon his magazine published a glowing cover story dubbing the Democratic duo "The Sunshine Boys."

The ABC Outrage

NY Post

October 10, 2004 -- Mainstream media bias against Republican presidental candidates is a fact of American po litical life.

Rarely, though, has this been so evident as this year; the establishment media seems to have become a wing of John Kerry's campaign.
