Adventures in Teaching Beginning Strings
by bassgravi on Thursday 10 November 2005

So...I've been teaching beginner strings for a couple/few months now, and to be perfectly honest, it's been fun. Although, I have to admit, sometimes when you realize your surrounded by fourth graders and outnumbered, it's a bit daunting.
Teaching does have it's rewards though. There are a lot of little sappy 'teacher' moments I won't be forgetting any time soon, like the girl who left saying "Mom, I'm gonna practice tonight, okay?", when at the beginning of class she was almost in tears because she couldn't seem to hold her bow the right way; or the girl who just had trouble 'getting it' that listened and watched me play it for her and then turned around and played the song we were working on perfectly.
To top it all off, the instrument(s) I'm teaching are not my primary instrument, so what was a terrifying prospect has turned into a fun learning *and* teaching experience for yours truly. It's great to see these kids walking in wanting to learn, and leaving wanting to know more.
If that doesn't give you warm fuzzies, then I don't know what could.
